Gaza at a crossroads: diplomacy falters as military escalation looms

Developments surrounding Gaza are rapidly intensifying, as diplomatic efforts, financial challenges, and military threats converge at a critical moment.

According to Reuters, a peace initiative reportedly backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump is facing significant financial difficulties, raising concerns about its viability and its ability to support or implement plans related to Gaza.

At the same time, Israeli media reports indicate that Israel is preparing for the possibility of resuming military operations in Gaza. This comes after a reported 60-day ultimatum given to Hamas—centered on demands for disarmament—expired without a confirmed agreement.

In a parallel development, Israel’s Kan reported that representatives of Hamas met with UN envoy Nikolay Mladenov in Cairo to discuss the issue of disarmament in Gaza.

According to an internal Hamas document, the movement clearly links any discussion of disarmament to a full end of Israeli occupation. The document states that its weapons are considered a “legitimate means of defense” as long as the occupation continues.

Hamas also rejects discussing its future or the fate of its weapons without a “comprehensive solution,” which includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the lifting of the blockade.

The movement draws a clear distinction between humanitarian issues and security matters, firmly rejecting any attempt to tie Gaza’s reconstruction to disarmament conditions.

The document further shows Hamas rejecting Mladenov’s proposal, describing it as “unrealistic” because it requires giving up military capabilities before stability is achieved on the ground.

Hamas also emphasizes that the fate of its weapons is an internal Palestinian matter, not subject to external dictates. It stresses the importance of maintaining Gaza’s existing administrative and security structures to prevent a governance vacuum and civil chaos during reconstruction.

While the movement signals preliminary openness to discussing “security arrangements,” it insists this can only happen as part of a broader agreement that guarantees Palestinian rights.

On the Israeli side, assessments indicate that Hamas’s response is unlikely to be accepted. Israel has already begun preparing operational plans for the possibility of renewed fighting in Gaza.

An Israeli security official stated that the army “will return to fighting in the near future” if Hamas does not disarm, adding that the movement is attempting to evade the proposed conditions.

Politically, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich escalated rhetoric by suggesting that what he described as a “final diplomatic phase” could lead to an expansion of Israel’s boundaries—remarks likely to further heighten tensions.

As uncertainty continues to surround negotiations and military rhetoric intensifies, the situation in Gaza appears to be entering a highly sensitive phase, with growing fears that diplomacy may collapse and give way to renewed escalation at any moment.
