Editorial Policy

1. Our editorial mission

Gazatte is an independent news organisation reporting on Gaza, Palestine, the Middle East and the wider world. Our purpose is to publish accurate, verifiable journalism about events that are frequently under-reported or contested.

Every editorial decision we make is guided by one question: is this accurate, and can we show our work?

2. Sourcing

We prefer first-hand reporting and named sources. Where a source cannot be named — because identifying them would put them at risk — we say so in the article and explain, as specifically as safety allows, why anonymity was granted and what the source is in a position to know.

Material from news agencies, other outlets or official bodies is attributed explicitly. We do not present another organisation’s reporting as our own.

User-submitted and social-media material is treated as a lead, not as a fact. It is published only after independent verification.

3. Verification

Before publication, factual claims are checked against at least one independent source wherever it is possible to do so. Photographs and video are checked for provenance — original capture date, location and context — and we do not republish visual material whose origin we cannot establish.

Where a significant claim cannot be independently confirmed, we either withhold it or publish it with an explicit statement of what remains unverified. We do not use certainty we have not earned.

4. Bylines and attribution

Articles reported by a named journalist carry that journalist’s byline and link to their profile page. Articles produced collectively by the newsroom are published under the Gazatte staff byline.

Opinion and analysis are labelled as such and always carry a named writer. Opinion pieces reflect the views of their author, not of Gazatte.

5. Independence and conflicts of interest

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom alone. Funders, donors and advertisers have no influence over what we cover or how we cover it, and no advance sight of our reporting.

Staff and contributors are required to disclose any personal, financial or political interest that could reasonably be seen to affect their reporting. Where such an interest exists, the person is recused from that coverage.

Sponsored or partner content, if we ever publish it, will be labelled unambiguously and kept visually distinct from editorial reporting.

6. Accuracy and corrections

We correct errors promptly and openly. We do not quietly delete or rewrite published work to hide a mistake.

7. Right of reply

When our reporting makes a substantive allegation about a person or organisation, we make a genuine attempt to reach them for comment before publication, and we say in the article whether they responded.

8. Use of AI

Reporting, editing and verification are performed by people. Automated tools may assist with translation, transcription and formatting, and any such output is reviewed by a human before publication. We do not publish machine-generated reporting presented as original journalism.
