Editorial Policy

1. Our editorial mission

Gazatte is an independent, privately funded news publication covering the Middle East and world affairs. Our purpose is to publish accurate, clearly sourced news and analysis, and to show readers where our information comes from.

Every editorial decision we make is guided by one question: is this accurate, and can we show our work?

2. Sourcing

Our reporting is based on public sources: official statements and documents, news agencies, other news organisations and public remarks on the record. Every significant fact is attributed in the article to the person, body or outlet that made it public. Where another outlet relies on an unnamed source, we say so and name that outlet.

Material from news agencies, other outlets or official bodies is attributed explicitly. We do not present another organisation’s reporting as our own.

Social-media posts and tips from readers are treated as leads, not facts. We report them only once an official body or an established news organisation has confirmed them, and we name who confirmed them.

3. Verification

Before publication, an editor checks the article’s names, figures, dates and quotes against the sources it cites. We use photographs and video only from sources that allow their use, such as official handouts and openly licensed collections. Images published from October 2026 carry a credit line naming their source.

When a claim comes from one side only, or has not been confirmed, we say who made it and that it has not been confirmed, never presenting it as established fact. We do not use certainty we have not earned.

4. Bylines and attribution

Articles written and edited in our newsroom are published under the byline “Gazatte Staff” unless the writer is credited by name, and the newsroom is responsible for them. Articles by outside writers carry the writer’s own name, marked “Contributor”. Pieces republished with permission name the original publication.

Opinion is clearly labelled “Opinion” and reflects the views of its writer, not of Gazatte. Most opinion pieces carry a named contributor; any written in the newsroom carry the “Gazatte Staff” byline unless the writer is credited by name.

5. Independence and conflicts of interest

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom alone. Advertisers and sponsors have no influence over what we cover or how we cover it, and no advance sight of our reporting.

Staff and contributors are required to disclose any personal, financial or political interest that could reasonably be seen to affect their reporting. Where such an interest exists, the person is recused from that coverage.

Sponsored or partner content, if we ever publish it, will be labelled unambiguously and kept visually distinct from editorial reporting.

6. Accuracy and corrections

We correct errors promptly and openly. We do not quietly delete or rewrite published work to hide a mistake.

7. Right of reply

When we report an allegation against a person or organisation, we include any public response they have given, or say that we found none. Anyone named in our reporting can send their response to the newsroom (see Contact below), and we will add a fair summary of it to the article with a dated note.

8. How we use AI

Gazatte is a small, privately funded newsroom. We use AI tools to help draft, summarise and translate reports based on public sources: official statements, documents and other news organisations’ reporting, which we credit by name. An editor checks every article against those sources, edits it and approves it before publication, and Gazatte takes full responsibility for everything we publish. We never use AI to invent quotes, sources, images or people. When we get something wrong, we correct it openly; see our corrections policy.

The Italian edition is translated automatically from English with AI and is not reviewed article by article. If the two versions differ, the English article is the reference.
