Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Gazatte (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is an independent news platform committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have about that information when you use our website at gazatte.co and any related services (collectively, the “Service”).

This policy explains how we process data. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, using the site does not constitute consent to advertising or optional tracking.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly:

  • Account registration details: name, email address, and password (stored hashed).
  • Profile information: display name, biography, and avatar you choose to upload.
  • Comments and interactions you post on articles.
  • Messages sent via our Contact form.

Information collected automatically:

  • Log data: IP address, browser type, pages visited, time and date of access.
  • Device information: screen size, operating system, and browser version.
  • Cookies and similar tracking technologies (see Sections 5 and 6).

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To create and manage your account and authenticate your identity.
  • To personalise your reading experience and your subscription feed.
  • To send you notifications about articles, comments, and platform updates.
  • To respond to your contact form submissions and support requests.
  • To analyse traffic patterns and improve site performance and content.
  • To detect, prevent, and address technical issues and fraudulent activity.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. Where we show advertising, Adsterra, Google and their partners may use cookies to serve, measure and personalise the ads you see, as described in Section 6, which also explains how you can limit this.

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, we process your personal data under the following legal bases:

  • Contractual necessity: to provide the Service you signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests: security, fraud prevention and aggregate cookieless analytics; and, outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Adsterra advertising, which you can turn off at any time (Section 6).
  • Consent: for optional notifications, for Adsterra advertising in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and for personalised Google ads where Google’s consent message asks for it (see Section 6).
  • Legal obligation: where required by applicable law.

5. Cookies

We use one essential cookie, which keeps you signed in after you log in. We set no analytics cookies. Your theme choice and cached translations are saved in your browser’s local storage, not in cookies, and are not sent to us. While you are signed in, local storage also keeps a copy of your account details, such as your name and email address, so the site can show that you are logged in; it is cleared when you log out. Some articles include a post or video from X, YouTube, Instagram or TikTok: it is loaded from that provider only when you choose to show it, and the provider may then set its own cookies and receive information such as your IP address, under its own privacy policy.

6. Advertising and Cookies

Gazatte may show advertising to help pay for its journalism: ads served by Adsterra and by Google AdSense, and ads we sell and show directly. Ads within our pages are labelled “Advertisement”. All ads are kept separate from our reporting, and none appear in the dashboard or on sign-in and account pages. Direct ads are images hosted by us and set no cookies. When you click one, you pass briefly through our server, which counts the click without storing personal data, before reaching the advertiser’s site. Advertisers have no influence over what we publish.

We load Adsterra advertising code only on public pages, never in dashboards, sign-in or account-management pages. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland we ask first, and no Adsterra code loads unless you accept; elsewhere it loads by default, and you can turn it off at any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer. To decide whether to ask, we use the country your connection comes from, as our hosting provider reports it, and we do not store it; if we cannot tell, we ask. Adsterra ads are shown to visitors and signed-in readers, never to the accounts of the Gazatte team or its contributors. Native ads run in isolated frames without access to the page, your account, cookies or storage. Banner code runs on the page itself, so it can see the page you are reading and, if you are signed in, act on the site as the page can; if you prefer not to load it, turn ads off with “Cookie settings”. Rejecting does not limit reading. We remember your choice for 180 days in local storage (gazatte-ad-consent-v1); without local storage a choice cannot be kept, so ads stay off where we ask first and stay on elsewhere. Turning ads off reloads the page to stop code already loaded; it does not delete cookies previously set by providers, which you can clear in your browser. When Adsterra ads load, Adsterra and its partners may receive your IP address, device and browsing information and use cookies to deliver, measure and personalise ads under their own privacy policies.

When Google AdSense ads are shown:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to Gazatte and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, at www.youronlinechoices.eu.
  • Where the law requires it, including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google’s consent message asks for your consent before cookies are used for personalised Google ads, and lets you change or withdraw that choice at any time.

If you decline personalised advertising, you may still see ads that are not personalised. To learn more, see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

7. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We may share your data with:

  • Hosting and infrastructure providers who process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics, which we use to count visits. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. It records page views, referring sites, browser and device type and page-loading speed, which we see only as aggregate totals. It does not identify individual readers or track them across other websites.
  • Law enforcement or regulatory bodies where required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
  • Advertising partners, such as Google, which receive information such as cookie identifiers, your IP address and the pages you visit when ads are shown (see Section 6).

Hosting, infrastructure and analytics providers are bound by confidentiality obligations and may not use your data for their own purposes. Advertising partners such as Google process data under their own privacy policies.

8. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate interests such as fraud prevention. Log data is retained for up to 90 days.

9. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Request deletion of your data (“right to be forgotten”).
  • Object to or restrict certain types of processing.
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent).

10. Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption, hashed password storage, and rate limiting. No system is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we are committed to responding to any breach promptly and transparently.

11. Children’s Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their data, please contact us and we will delete it immediately.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the “Last updated” date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
