A 35-year-old Israeli tourist has been charged with arson in connection with a wildfire that broke out near Sellia in southern Crete, after investigators said the blaze may have started while he was using a barbecue at a rented villa.

The man was arrested on Saturday and appeared before the Rethymno prosecutor on Sunday, where he was charged with arson with possible intent. He is being held and is due to appear before an investigating magistrate on Monday.

The fire began at about 7.11pm on Friday, 14 August, in the Sellia area of the municipality of Agios Vasileios in the Rethymno region, according to reports citing the Greek Fire Service investigation. Authorities said the blaze spread rapidly in strong winds and dry conditions.

More than 60 firefighters, supported by specialist wildfire teams, vehicles, helicopters, water tankers and volunteers, were involved in the response. Greece's 112 emergency system issued precautionary evacuation alerts for the communities of Fotinari and Souda as the fire spread. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after about four hours.

Investigators believe the fire originated in the grounds of the villa where the Israeli tourist was staying with other visitors. Local reporting said the villa owner had warned guests that barbecues were prohibited because of the high fire risk, including through written instructions.

The exact circumstances surrounding the ignition remain under investigation. Authorities are collecting statements and other evidence to establish how the barbecue was used and how the fire spread.

The case has also moved beyond the initial allegation of negligent fire-setting. The Rethymno prosecutor has now brought a charge of arson with possible intent, and the suspect is due to give evidence before the investigating magistrate on Monday.

The incident comes during a period of elevated wildfire risk across Greece. The Greek Fire Service had warned of severe fire conditions, while strong winds have complicated firefighting operations in Crete and other parts of the country.
