Nine Palestinians, including seven police personnel and a 13-year-old girl, were reported killed on Wednesday after an Israeli airstrike hit the headquarters of the municipal police in central Gaza City, while another Palestinian was killed in a separate strike in Nuseirat, according to Gaza authorities.

The strike hit the police headquarters behind the post office on Omar al-Mukhtar Street, the report said. At least 15 civilians were also injured, with some in serious or critical condition.

The dead and wounded were taken to the Saraya field hospital and Al-Shifa Hospital, according to the report.

Six of the police personnel were initially identified as Brigadier General Abu Akram Jandiyah, Colonel Abu Abdullah al-Hajin, Colonel Abu Khalil Tamraz, Major Bilal Abu Samaan, Colonel Abu Omar Alyan and Colonel Faten al-Sahhar. The report did not immediately identify the seventh police officer.

A separate Israeli strike hit a motorcycle in Nuseirat, in central Gaza, killing its rider, according to the same account. The circumstances of that strike and the identity of the person killed were not immediately independently verified.

Gaza's Interior Ministry called on mediators and the international community to intervene urgently to halt what it described as a dangerous escalation and attacks against the police force. It also rejected Israeli claims used to justify attacks on police personnel, saying they were intended to weaken the police and contribute to disorder in Palestinian society.

The ministry has repeatedly said that police officers have been targeted while carrying out security duties. Its latest public statements before Wednesday's incident said the police had paid a heavy price in deaths among its commanders and personnel, including the Gaza City police chief killed on August 13.

Reuters reported on August 13 that an Israeli drone strike in western Gaza City killed Gaza City's police chief, Colonel Jamal Abu Kmail, and critically wounded two other people. Israel did not immediately comment on that strike at the time.

The Israeli military had previously described some strikes against police or security personnel as targeting Hamas members or commanders. No Israeli statement specifically addressing Wednesday's reported strike on the municipal police headquarters was available in the sources checked for this report.

The casualty figures in Wednesday's incident remain subject to further confirmation as rescue and medical teams continue to recover victims and treat the wounded.
