Canada has cancelled plans for a joint ceremony with the United States celebrating the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge following President Donald Trump’s announcement of new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
Officials from both countries had been expected to attend the cross-border celebration on Friday, July 24. The bridge connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit River.
The Canadian government said holding a shared celebratory event would be inappropriate following the latest trade measures threatened by Washington. Canada will instead hold its own ceremony on Friday.
