A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Egypt early Monday, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, with residents across Cairo and several Egyptian governorates feeling the tremor.

The institute said the earthquake occurred at 3:34 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located about 38 kilometers north of Suez.

The institute said it received reports from residents who felt the earthquake, but no deaths or property damage were reported.

Later, the head of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said in televised remarks that earthquakes are usually followed by minor aftershocks, adding that five aftershocks had been recorded so far.

The Egyptian government announced on Monday that it had activated its health emergency plan following the earthquake, which affected several areas, including the capital Cairo. Official reports indicated that no human or material losses had been recorded so far.

The Ministry of Health and Population said it had ordered the immediate activation of the emergency health response plan after citizens reported feeling the early morning earthquake.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed the central emergency operations room at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to coordinate with emergency rooms at health directorates across the governorates to ensure continuous monitoring of the situation.

The minister also ordered the highest level of readiness in emergency and critical care departments across hospitals nationwide, while confirming the preparedness of the Egyptian Ambulance Authority, rapid response teams, and medical supplies, including medicines, equipment, blood units, and oxygen reserves.

The ministry confirmed that the health situation remained stable and that no earthquake-related injuries had been reported so far.

The Egyptian Red Crescent also announced the activation of its emergency response plan in cities where the earthquake was felt, confirming that no reports of human or property damage had been received.
