Washington and Tehran resumed exchanging strikes on Wednesday after four days of calm, while US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with a “harsh response” following a surprise missile attack targeting American sites in Jordan.

Trump said US defence systems intercepted the missiles before they reached their targets.

The Jordanian Armed Forces announced that they had intercepted five Iranian missiles. The US military subsequently struck the Piranshahr area in north-western Iran, without causing any casualties.

Alongside the renewed escalation, Tehran rejected Oman’s proposal for the joint management of the Strait of Hormuz and insisted on maintaining control over the waterway.

Iran also announced that it had targeted three tankers, saying they had violated instructions and travelled along an “unsafe and illegal route.”

A senior Iranian official said Tehran had informed Oman that it rejected the proposal and that there was “no chance of its success,” reaffirming Iran’s commitment to its approach in the strait.

The official added that sharing management of the waterway equally with Oman would not serve Iran’s interests, despite Tehran considering Muscat an important neighbour.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the proposal did not meet Tehran’s demands.
