Two people were killed and two others injured during a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's southern Krasnodar region early on Tuesday, where a fire also broke out at the Afipsky oil refinery, according to regional authorities.

Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said debris from a drone fell on the grounds of Afipskaya railway station in the Seversky district.

“Unfortunately, two people were killed,” Kondratyev said in a statement. Two others were injured, according to the governor's account cited by Reuters.

A fire broke out separately at the Afipsky refinery during the attack. Russian authorities said emergency services were working at the site, while at least 10 private homes in the nearby settlement of Afipsky were damaged and one caught fire.

The extent of damage to the refinery was not immediately clear.

The Afipsky facility is primarily geared towards exports and processed about 7.2 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024, equivalent to roughly 144,000 barrels a day, according to Reuters.

The refinery has been targeted repeatedly by Ukrainian drones in recent months. Ukraine's military said it struck the same facility in June, while Russian officials at the time acknowledged that a fire had broken out after falling drone debris.

Kyiv has increasingly targeted Russian refineries, fuel depots and other energy infrastructure, saying such facilities provide revenue and resources supporting Moscow's war effort.

The campaign has intensified in August. Ukrainian forces struck Russia's TANECO refinery in Tatarstan and the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in Krasnodar on 20 August, with fires reported at both sites.

A drone attack also forced Russia's Perm refinery, the country's seventh-largest oil processing plant by volume, to halt operations after a fire damaged technological units on 21 August, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters.

Russian and Ukrainian forces have both stepped up long-range drone attacks against infrastructure far behind the front line. At least 10 people were killed in Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia and Russian-held Ukrainian territory on 22 August, according to Russian officials.

Tuesday's attack came as Russia continued strikes inside Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported casualties from Russian attacks in the Zaporizhzhia region, while fighting and long-range strikes continued elsewhere along the front.

There was no immediate detailed assessment from either side of the operational damage caused at the Afipsky refinery in Tuesday's attack.
