Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Brazil’s sovereignty and opposition to foreign interference during an extended phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The conversation took place less than three months before Brazil’s presidential election, which is expected to be shaped by heightened political tensions and a contest between Lula and right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

Xi told Lula that China placed significant value on Brazil’s international position and influence. He said Beijing supported the country in protecting its sovereignty and independence, resisting external interference and contributing to regional and global stability.

Trade Negotiations Move Forward

The two leaders also agreed on the importance of accelerating negotiations for an agreement between China and Mercosur.

The South American trade bloc includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

During the call, which lasted more than an hour, Lula reaffirmed his commitment to diversifying Brazil’s export markets and commercial partnerships as the country faces growing pressure from U.S. tariffs.

Washington introduced two new tariff packages on Brazilian products this month, following a significant increase in duties during 2025.

The measures were connected to the prosecution and imprisonment of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on charges related to planning a coup.

Lula has criticised the tariffs as an attempt to exert political influence over Brazil during an election year.

Political Tensions Ahead of Election

Brazil recently refused entry visas to two U.S. officials who had planned to meet electoral authorities in Brasília before the October election.

Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and son of the former president, has continued making unsupported claims that Brazil’s voting system is insecure.

While China highlighted its opposition to foreign interference during the presidential conversation, the official Brazilian account of the call did not include that wording.
