Crowds at New York New Jersey Stadium booed U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino as they entered the pitch for the World Cup trophy ceremony on Sunday.

The ceremony followed Spain’s 1–0 extra-time victory over defending champion Argentina, securing the country’s second World Cup title.

The jeers subsided as Trump and Infantino began presenting medals to the players and coaching staff. Trump, who arrived at the stadium by helicopter, remained on the podium alongside the Spanish squad before stepping aside as captain Rodri lifted the trophy amid the team’s celebrations.

The ceremony was also attended by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Spain’s King Felipe VI.

Trump had previously sparked one of the tournament’s biggest controversies when he contacted Infantino and asked him to reconsider the red card shown to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun during the group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The resulting one-match suspension was put on hold, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium in the round of 16. The United States was eliminated after losing the match 4–1
