The Ministry of Health in Mauritania announced the detection of suspected diphtheria cases in Akjoujt, stressing that the situation remains under control and does not currently raise concern.
According to the ministry, 19 individuals showed symptoms similar to tonsillitis between April 13 and May 2, which can overlap with diphtheria. Of these, 10 patients have recovered, two were transferred to Nouakchott as a precaution, and seven remain under medical observation.
Health authorities confirmed that response measures are ongoing, including field investigations supported by the World Health Organization and targeted vaccination campaigns in affected areas.
