British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing one of the toughest political tests since the Labour Party’s victory in the 2024 general election, as growing economic pressures and recent political setbacks fuel criticism of his leadership.
Starmer’s early warning to voters that “things will get worse before they get better” has increasingly become a reality for many across Britain. The situation intensified after Labour suffered major losses in recent local elections, raising concerns about the party’s direction and Starmer’s grip on leadership.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the British government is under mounting pressure amid public frustration over worsening living conditions and economic uncertainty. Many voters say they have not seen improvements in their daily lives compared to 2024.
The UK economy is also showing signs of strain. Unemployment is approaching its highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation continues to rise, and living standards have largely stagnated. Economic growth is expected to slow to its weakest pace in three years.
At the same time, sharply rising mortgage costs following tensions linked to the Iran conflict have pushed economic concerns ahead of immigration as the top issue for British voters, according to polling by YouGov.
While analysts point to global instability and the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump as contributing factors, economists and business leaders have also criticized Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves over tax increases imposed on businesses.
Andrew Goodwin, chief UK economist at Oxford Economics, warned that some government decisions could further slow economic growth, describing the British economy as “growing at an extremely weak pace.”
