The Mediterranean basin has turned into a climate hotspot as unprecedented heatwaves continue to trigger large-scale wildfires stretching from the shores of North Africa to southern Europe and the Middle East.

A report by Al Jazeera said the fires have turned vast areas of vegetation into ashes, causing environmental and material losses that could require decades to recover.

In Tunisia, Civil Protection teams have brought 74 fires under control, while firefighting efforts continue against nine active hotspots in the provinces of Bizerte, Béja, Jendouba and Kef.

The developments come after Tunisia recorded more than 600 fires in July, which burned around 240 hectares, amid a heatwave approaching 50 degrees Celsius and dry “Sirocco” winds that complicated access to mountainous areas.

Despite extensive material and agricultural losses and some fires entering the cooling phase, Tunisian authorities confirmed that no fatalities have been recorded.

In Algeria, firefighting teams are battling 63 active fires in Bouira province after extinguishing more than 1,600 fires over the past two weeks, bringing the total number of fires since July 8 to 1,670.

The fires spread from Annaba in the east toward Skikda, Médéa, Jijel and Bouira, prompting authorities to evacuate residential areas nearby. Young volunteers also joined efforts to support civil protection teams in containing the flames.

The correspondent reported that official evacuation orders were issued for many residents living near fire zones to protect their lives, while widespread volunteer efforts continued alongside firefighters, with expectations of lower temperatures at the beginning of next week.

Sixth-Generation Wildfires

The report explained that temperatures in the Mediterranean basin are rising at a rate 20% faster than the global average, contributing to the emergence of what are known as “sixth-generation wildfires” or “megafires.”

These extreme fires are characterized by several major risks:

  • Extreme heat and rapid spread: The fires generate massive amounts of thermal energy, allowing them to create their own air currents and winds, causing unpredictable expansion.
  • Exceeding firefighting capabilities: Their intensity can overwhelm traditional firebreaks and aerial firefighting efforts due to heavy smoke and extreme heat radiation.
  • Depletion of vegetation cover: Climate change has transformed forests into highly dry and flammable areas, turning vegetation into rapid fuel for fires.

From Spain to the Levant

The crisis has not been limited to one geographic area but has spread across Mediterranean countries. The first outbreaks emerged in Spain, Greece, Italy and France, where French authorities continued efforts to control a massive wildfire in a mountainous area northeast of Marseille, while firefighting operations continued in Spain’s Guadalajara province.

The damage also affected countries including Turkey, Cyprus, Syria and Lebanon, where flames consumed large forest areas and regions near residential communities.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that humanity has failed to curb global warming and must immediately change course to avoid a climate disaster that could spiral out of control.

In an interview ahead of the COP30 climate summit, Guterres acknowledged that it is now “inevitable” that the world will exceed the temperature target set by the Paris Climate Agreement, leading to “devastating consequences” globally.
