Powerful explosions shook Kyiv early Sunday after Russia launched a wide missile attack targeting the Ukrainian capital and several regions across the country.

Kyiv’s military administration chief, Tymur Tkachenko, said the capital came under ballistic missile attack, adding that at least four locations were damaged, including residential buildings.

Dozens of residents were seen sheltering inside metro stations as explosions echoed across the city. Air raid alerts were also activated across Ukraine during the attack.

The strike came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia could be preparing a major attack using the Oreshnik hypersonic missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier vowed a military response after a Ukrainian attack targeted the Moscow-controlled Luhansk region, causing deaths and injuries.
