Speaking at a joint press conference in Doha on Tuesday with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the Qatari top diplomat stressed that Pakistan’s role is “very important” for both the region and the world, noting
that Doha and Ankara support Pakistani mediation efforts.
He warned that “the region is going through sensitive circumstances that require consultation with sister and friendly countries.”
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the Qatari foreign minister said that freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway is unfortunately being used as a “weapon.”
For his part, the Turkish foreign minister reiterated Ankara’s support for Pakistan’s mediating role between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open and maritime navigation would be guaranteed.
The press conference came after U.S. President Donald Trump hinted on Monday evening at the possibility of returning to conflict, describing the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on April 8 as being in the “intensive care unit,” suggesting it was on the verge of collapse.
Meanwhile, Tehran has reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy while simultaneously stating it is prepared for all possible scenarios.
It is worth noting that Iran recently submitted its response to the Pakistani mediator, who then passed it to the American side, which reportedly described it as “very bad.”
Iran has maintained its position on its right to uranium enrichment, while showing openness to discussing a temporary suspension, but rejected the transfer of its highly enriched uranium stockpiles outside the country.
Tehran has also insisted on what it describes as a “special status” for the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of a maritime blockade on its ports, and the unfreezing of its assets abroad.
