The Portuguese Football Federation has appointed Jorge Jesus as the new head coach of the national team, just days after Roberto Martínez stepped down following Portugal's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Martínez resigned after Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, stating that his contract had concluded with the team's exit from the tournament.

The 71-year-old Jesus is one of Portugal's most experienced managers, having enjoyed successful spells with Benfica and Sporting CP. Most recently, he guided Al Nassr to the 2025–26 Saudi Pro League title.

Under Jesus last season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 29 goals in 33 appearances, playing a key role in Al Nassr's championship-winning campaign.

Ronaldo, now 41, has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup was his final appearance at the tournament, although he has not yet announced whether he will retire from international football.
