Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Wednesday that Poland is ready to host American troops that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to withdraw from Germany, stressing that he would personally push Trump to redeploy the forces further east into Poland.

Speaking during NATO military exercises in Lithuania, Nawrocki said Poland already has the infrastructure needed to receive additional U.S. troops. His remarks came as the Pentagon prepares to withdraw around 5,000 American soldiers from Germany over the coming year, while Trump has hinted that even more troops could eventually leave the country.

The proposal has sparked debate inside Poland. Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently warned that Poland should not attempt to “attract” troops away from allied countries, although he confirmed Warsaw would welcome any expansion of the U.S. military presence on Polish territory as long as it does not weaken European unity.

Nawrocki’s political camp, the opposition Law and Justice party, criticized Tusk’s comments, accusing him of prioritizing relations with Berlin over Poland’s security interests.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki said talks between Warsaw and Washington on expanding the American military presence are already underway on both diplomatic and military levels. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also stated that any additional U.S. troops would be welcomed in Poland regardless of where they are redeployed from.
