Brigadier General Hassan Jouni, a military and strategic analyst, explained that Iran’s recent attack on Israel was designed to send a calculated military message rather than open a wide confrontation. He noted that targeting Ramat David Airbase carried symbolic weight, as Iran identified it as the launch site for Israeli jets that struck Beirut’s southern suburb. The strike was therefore framed as a direct response to that operation.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had targeted Ramat David with ballistic missiles, while Iranian officials confirmed the attack was retaliation for the Beirut strike. Jouni emphasized that the geography of the attack supports this interpretation: it was confined to northern Israel, directly linked to the Lebanese front, without extending into deeper or more strategic Israeli territory as in previous escalations.

He added that Iran’s accompanying rhetoric reinforced this approach, explicitly tying the strike to the Beirut suburb incident. The aim, he argued, was to establish a deterrence equation focused on Lebanon rather than trigger a regional war. Jouni also pointed to the type of missiles used as further evidence of limited intent. Initial reports suggest they were not advanced or cluster munitions with massive destructive power, but rather less sophisticated weapons chosen to avoid large-scale damage.

According to Jouni, this reflects Iran’s desire to send a political and military signal without provoking uncontrollable escalation. Tehran seeks to draw a “red line” around Beirut’s southern suburb, demonstrating readiness to respond to any attack there while keeping escalation within manageable bounds. He cautioned, however, that future developments depend on Israel’s response and the level of military activity in Lebanon. Continued strikes in southern Lebanon or expanded operations could push Iran to reconsider its restraint.

Meanwhile, sirens sounded across northern Israel during the attack, and the Israeli army reported intercepting the missiles. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held security consultations, as Israeli and U.S. officials confirmed that Tel Aviv is weighing its response.
