Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Sunday that Hezbollah is “in retreat,” stressing that Israel will not allow the group to fire toward its territory. He said the Israeli army is delivering strong blows to Hezbollah, claiming 350 of its fighters were eliminated within a week. Netanyahu also pointed to the discovery of extensive underground infrastructure during Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.
The war in Lebanon erupted on March 2 after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the first U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran on February 28. Israel responded with a broad campaign of airstrikes and a ground invasion. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks have killed 3,593 people since March 2.
Turning to Gaza, Netanyahu said the Israeli army is tightening its grip on Hamas from all directions. “We will not allow Hamas to rearm and we continue eliminating its senior leaders,” he stated. He added that Israeli forces currently control more than 60% of the Gaza Strip and “will soon reach 70%.”
Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas since October 2025, Israel continues to strike targets in Gaza, claiming to target Hamas fighters and infrastructure. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that since the war began on October 7, 2023, 72,961 Palestinians have been killed, including 951 deaths since the ceasefire took effect last October.
