Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under heavy criticism on social media following his response to an incident involving an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon.
The backlash erupted after an image circulated online showing the soldier destroying the statue, sparking outrage among users who viewed the act as deeply offensive. In his response, Netanyahu stated that the statue had merely been “damaged” and referred to it as a “Catholic religious icon,” avoiding direct mention of Jesus. He also claimed that Christianity is flourishing in Israel.
His remarks were widely condemned, with critics accusing him of downplaying the seriousness of the incident and distorting the facts. Social media users flooded the comments with criticism, pointing to what they described as a broader pattern of abuses against Christians. Many shared reports and footage alleging killings of civilians and journalists, as well as incidents involving assaults, detentions, and attacks on churches in Gaza and Lebanon.
Others challenged Netanyahu’s repeated claims that Christians are being persecuted and killed in Lebanon and Syria, calling his statements misleading and inconsistent with realities on the ground.
Netanyahu’s promise of “harsh disciplinary action” against the soldier was also met with skepticism and ridicule. Critics cited previous cases in which Israeli soldiers accused of serious violations faced little or no accountability, with some even returning to service after the incidents.
The controversy comes amid ongoing regional tensions, further amplifying the sensitivity of incidents involving religious symbols and their broader political and social implications.
