Barcelona president Joan Laporta responded strongly to the controversy surrounding Julian Alvarez’s comments at the 2026 World Cup. Alvarez, currently at Atletico Madrid, expressed his desire to leave in the summer transfer window to “fulfill his dream,” sparking anger from his club and fans.
Laporta clarified that Alvarez “never spoke about Barcelona” but simply hinted at wanting a change. He revealed that Barça had long tracked Alvarez, even before his move to Manchester City, but financial constraints prevented a deal. Sporting director Deco has since made an offer, which Atletico rejected, citing lack of a replacement.
“We will keep the offer for as long as we deem appropriate, but we won’t be at Atletico’s mercy,” Laporta said, adding that the bid is fair and significant. He criticized Atletico’s complaint to Spanish and international football bodies, calling it unnecessary and politically motivated.
Laporta emphasized Barça’s respect for Atletico but insisted the club will not wait indefinitely. “If they want to close the deal, great. If not, we’ll move on,” he stated. The saga highlights tensions between the two clubs, with Alvarez’s future now a focal point of the summer transfer market.
