North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised naval sea trials this week for one of the country’s newly built destroyers, according to state media reports released on Friday.
The Korean Central News Agency said Kim observed tests focused on the ship’s maneuverability and operational performance, while reviewing the readiness of the vessel alongside senior military officials.
The inspection comes amid ongoing efforts by North Korea to strengthen and modernize its naval forces as part of a broader military expansion program.
During the same visit, Kim also toured factories responsible for manufacturing self-propelled artillery systems and battle tanks, emphasizing the country’s push to boost domestic arms production despite international sanctions and growing regional tensions.
Images published by North Korean state media showed Kim aboard the destroyer and inspecting military equipment production lines. Reuters said the images could not be independently verified.
Analysts say Pyongyang has increasingly focused on upgrading its naval and strategic weapons programs in recent years, alongside continued missile testing and military development initiatives.
