Washington is expected to have the U.S. Army train the Lebanese Army as part of an effort to help it deal with Hezbollah, a step aimed at disarming the group. Reports indicate that Israel also supports this initiative, according to Channel Kan 11 news last night.

At the same time, talks continue between Israeli and Lebanese delegations in Washington to explore ways to implement this step. Sources familiar with the matter noted that the meetings are held in a positive atmosphere, with some progress made on certain issues.

Sources told Newsweek magazine that the move enjoys Israeli support. Israeli officials claim that, in response to U.S. pressure, Israel will refrain from attacking Beirut’s southern suburb as part of the agreements. However, Washington confirmed the presence of Israeli ground forces in southern Lebanon, within the expanded security zone currently occupied by the army.
