Israeli forces detained dozens of Palestinians during widespread raids in the occupied West Bank village of Tal on Saturday, following a deadly shooting that killed at least four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian authorities said the violence began on Friday after armed Israeli settlers approached Tal, southwest of Nablus, and attempted to attack residents of the village.

The Israeli military initially described the Israelis involved as hikers. It later acknowledged that some of them were armed, saying both Palestinians and Israelis opened fire before soldiers intervened.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to take “strong measures” in response to the incident. His office said the measures would include demolishing the family home of one of the Palestinians involved and accelerating approval for further Israeli settlement construction in the area.

Tal Mayor Walid Zeidan said approximately 70 Palestinians had been detained by Saturday. Israeli forces established a field interrogation centre inside one of the village’s homes, while military patrols continued moving through the streets and searching residential properties.

Zeidan said between 10 and 12 detainees had been released, but the raids remained underway and residents were largely absent from the streets.

Hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers live among millions of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, which Israel seized in the 1967 war. Most countries and United Nations bodies consider the settlements illegal under international law, a position Israel rejects.

Israeli settler attacks against Palestinian villages have increased sharply in recent months.

Friday’s confrontation occurred in Area A, which is administered by the Palestinian Authority and which Israeli civilians are prohibited from entering under Israeli law. The area accounts for less than one-fifth of the occupied West Bank.

Videos circulated online appeared to show a tense and chaotic confrontation between Palestinian villagers and a large group of Israelis, some of whom were visibly armed. Israeli soldiers were also present.

In one scene, at least two Israelis appeared to push Palestinians and strike them with rifles. A Palestinian then seized one of the weapons and appeared to be shot dead moments later.

Voices could be heard shouting in Hebrew for people to move away and claiming that the Palestinian had taken a weapon. A child could also be heard chanting for revenge. The authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.

Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir said the operation launched after the shooting was intended to prevent attacks, protect Israeli civilians and stop further escalation.

Zeidan rejected claims that the settlers had entered the area for a recreational hike. He said villagers approached the group only to defend their homes and land from an attempted attack.

The growing wave of settler violence across the occupied West Bank has drawn condemnation from international organisations and several European countries, but the attacks have continued.
