Despite the announcement of a ceasefire, developments on the ground show that the situation in southern Lebanon remains far from stable, with ongoing Israeli warnings and threats of continued military action.
The Israeli army has directly warned Lebanese civilians not to return to the south, making it clear that the area is still considered an active military zone. In an official statement, Israel confirmed it will continue carrying out strikes against what it calls “imminent threats”, effectively meaning that the ceasefire does not include a halt to attacks.
This reflects a familiar pattern, where a declared ceasefire coexists with ongoing daily strikes and targeted killings, raising serious questions about the nature of the current truce.
At the same time, clear contradictions are emerging in Israel’s position. The defense minister had previously stated that residents would not be allowed to return south of the Litani River until the security of northern settlements is guaranteed, yet developments on the ground suggest otherwise.
Lebanese civilians have already begun returning to areas south of the Litani River, and are actively repairing infrastructure, including bridges damaged by Israeli strikes, either in defiance of the warnings or due to lack of alternatives.
Given these developments, it appears that strikes may continue despite the ceasefire, leaving the door open for renewed escalation at any moment.
