European activists recounted harrowing experiences after Israeli forces intercepted the Freedom Flotilla bound for Gaza. They described being beaten, stripped, deprived of food, water, and sleep, and held in dark metal containers used as makeshift prisons. French activist Sabrina Azizi said detainees faced violent treatment from the outset, including confiscation of passports and forced confinement. She reported receiving an unexplained injection and noted testimonies of injuries ranging from fractures to electric shocks, as well as sexual assaults.

Activist Fawzi Al-Shehi confirmed similar abuse, describing “ships of shame” where detainees endured prolonged fear, thirst, and exhaustion. He said some were forced to kneel for hours under the sun, while others bore dog bite marks. Detainees were later transported in overheated trucks, worsening their suffering.

Organizers documented at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape, among the 430 activists detained after Israel intercepted 50 boats in international waters. Several required hospitalization upon release. International reactions followed, with Germany calling the allegations serious and Italy’s prosecutors opening investigations into possible crimes of abduction, torture, and sexual violence.

The testimonies highlight what activists called a “floating prison” and drew parallels to the daily suffering of Palestinians in Israeli detention, underscoring the gravity of the accusations and the need for accountability.
