Four-time world champions Germany were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32 after suffering a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Paraguay stunned Germany by taking the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso, heading into halftime with a deserved advantage. Germany responded early in the second half when Kai Havertz equalized with a header in the 54th minute, setting up a tense and closely contested battle.

Both teams created several chances throughout the remainder of the match, but goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Orlando Gil produced a series of crucial saves to keep the score level at the end of regular time.

The match became the first at the 2026 World Cup to go into extra time and penalties. Germany thought they had found a winner in the 102nd minute through Jonathan Tah, but the goal was ruled out by VAR after a foul by Waldemar Anton on Paraguay's goalkeeper.
