France’s Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced Monday that the country had recorded its first case of the Hanta virus in a woman evacuated from the cruise ship “MV Hondius.”

According to the Associated Press, the French woman — one of five French passengers repatriated from the tourist cruise ship “MV Hondius” on Sunday — developed symptoms during the journey back to Paris. The minister said her condition worsened overnight.

The evacuation process for passengers from the ship began Sunday after it docked in the Canary Islands. Passengers were transported to their home countries aboard military and government aircraft.

People wearing full protective suits and masks accompanied passengers from the ship to shore in Tenerife as containment efforts continued through Monday.

The World Health Organization recommended close monitoring of passengers, while many countries imposed quarantine measures on those aboard.

U.S. officials said late Sunday that one American was among 17 people being evacuated to Nebraska after testing positive for the Hanta virus, though no symptoms had appeared.

French media outlet France 24 reported that the French Health Ministry confirmed initial isolation measures had been taken for people considered “high-risk contacts.”
