The omission of defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal highlighted the absence of Madrid names as Spain seeks a second World Cup title after 2010.

De la Fuente dismissed concerns that the decision might alienate Madrid fans. Speaking at a media breakfast organized by RTVE and EFE, he said: “For me, the best team ever is the Spanish national team. I don’t care where players come from. What matters is Spaniards proud to represent their nation.”

Barcelona’s contingent includes Joan García, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres. The coach also called up seven Premier League players. He stressed that sporting criteria guided his choices, even if personal judgment inevitably played a role. “If I make a mistake or act for short-term gain, I put my job at risk,” he added.

Spain begins Group H against Cape Verde, followed by Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. De la Fuente may be cautious with Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mikel Merino, all recovering from fitness issues. “We’re in contact with clubs and know they’re progressing well. I’m optimistic they’ll be ready for the opener,” he said, while noting Spain’s vision extends beyond the first matches.

On 18-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, expected to lead Spain’s attack, De la Fuente remarked: “He’s incredibly excited and eager to play. Despite his young age, he shows remarkable maturity. He knows this is his moment, and he’s ready to seize it.”
