Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella’s security team says rebel groups may be planning an attack against him weeks before he takes office.

The team said Monday that it had received intelligence warning of a “criminal plan” to target De la Espriella during transition meetings ahead of his inauguration.

According to the statement, the National Liberation Army and dissident factions of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia allegedly offered nearly $1 million to carry out the attack.

The intelligence also raised concerns that individuals linked to the alleged plot could attempt to infiltrate press conferences and other public events attended by the president-elect.

Despite the warning, De la Espriella will not suspend his public schedule, his campaign team said.

His representatives called on Colombian authorities to open an investigation to determine the origin and credibility of the threat and identify those responsible.
