The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Tuesday the death of Canadian player Brandon Clarke at the age of 29, in news that shocked the NBA community.

In a statement, the Grizzlies said they were “deeply saddened and devastated” by Clarke’s passing, describing him as a beloved teammate and an important figure within the Memphis community.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Clarke joined Memphis after being selected in the 2019 NBA Draft and spent his entire NBA career with the franchise. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2020 after averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds during his debut season.

The Canadian forward struggled with recurring knee and leg injuries in recent years, limiting him to only two appearances during the 2025–26 season.

Last month, reports also drew attention after Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on charges including possession of a controlled substance, trespassing, and fleeing police while speeding.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league was “in shock” following the announcement, describing Clarke as a respected and beloved player who played the game with passion and determination.
