In remarks to Lebanon’s Al-Diyar newspaper, Berri stressed that Lebanon will accept nothing less than the withdrawal of Israeli forces, reconstruction, deployment of the Lebanese army, and the return of displaced residents.

He argued that Lebanon cannot overcome its crisis without a regional and international umbrella, particularly a Saudi–Iranian understanding under U.S. sponsorship. Berri revealed he discussed possible government changes with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who judged the timing inappropriate.

Berri emphasized that Israel’s attacks, destruction, and crimes against southern Lebanon are being documented, with plans to pursue legal action against Israel. He dismissed speculation about a potential meeting between Israel’s prime minister and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, saying it is not under consideration.

The negotiations are set to begin today at 9 a.m. Washington time, with Lebanon’s delegation led by former ambassador Simon Karam.
