Archaeologists have uncovered a remarkable prehistoric structure near Stonehenge in southern England that may represent an early prototype of the iconic 5,000-year-old monument.

The discovery, made by researchers from Wessex Archaeology, consists of two massive wooden posts set approximately 120 meters apart. The posts were carefully aligned with the sunrise during the summer solstice and the sunset during the winter solstice, suggesting the site held ceremonial and astronomical significance.

Based on the depth of the postholes, archaeologists estimate the wooden pillars originally stood between three and four meters tall. The site is believed to predate Stonehenge by around 500 years and may have served as a major gathering place for religious ceremonies.

Excavations also uncovered pottery fragments, animal bones, stone tools, and a rare disc-shaped flint knife, which researchers believe may have symbolized the sun.

The excavation was led by British archaeologist Phil Harding, who described the discovery as the highlight of his career, saying opportunities like this "come only once in a lifetime."

Stonehenge, built in stages beginning around 3000 BC on Salisbury Plain, remains one of Britain's most famous prehistoric landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While its exact purpose is still debated, its alignment with the summer and winter solstices has long suggested a connection to astronomy and ritual.

The findings were released just ahead of this year's summer solstice, when thousands of visitors gather at Stonehenge to celebrate the longest day of the year.
