At least 25 people have died in the United States due to the ongoing extreme heatwave, with 22 fatalities reported in New Jersey.

ABC reported that temperatures in Washington reached 38.8°C during Independence Day, breaking a record that had stood for more than 100 years. The report stated: “It is believed that the record heatwave caused 25 deaths from the Deep South to the Midwest and the East Coast.”

According to NBC, citing New Jersey health official Dalia Owais, the number of heat-related deaths in the state rose from 19 to 22 on Saturday. Additionally, one death partially linked to heat was recorded in Illinois, and two more in Mississippi.

Several regions across the United States are experiencing severe heat and stormy weather, affecting the stability of power networks. In New York, temperatures climbed to 38°C on Thursday, melting asphalt in the city. Other East Coast cities canceled or postponed Independence Day festivities due to the abnormal heat.

On Saturday, at least 840,000 households across the U.S. were left without electricity as a result of the extreme heat and stormy conditions.
